The team took a few months off as they re-designed what they were going to do with the mixed-tape concept, and they've definitely come up with a winning combo. Where the old mixed-tape was simply a free downloadable album of new music, with a website available for online listening, the new format is an entire video music magazine show AS WELL AS the free downloadable album. There are videos from famous, as well as up-and-coming artists, all tied together by an overarching theme (Soul this month) and a brilliant presenter adding background info to the music.

I was very worried, when these albums stopped coming out, that Mercedes had simply stopped funding the project and it was going to die. However, I'm now more than ecstatic to see it back in this new, much improved format.

A small taste below:

Webkit first browser engine to score 100 on Acid 3

If you're all about standards compliance on the web, meaning that no one company can control the web through proprietary standards (here's looking at you Microsoft) then you'll be glad to know that Webkit, the rendering engine behind Apple's Safari, Konqueror on Linux and multiple mobile web-browsers, has become the first publicly available rendering engine to score 100/100 on the Acid 3 test. The added twist was that customers were given the choice of how much they wanted to pay for the album. This sort of distribution model is likely where most of the industry will turn as the ever-greedy record labels continue to alienate their customers with DRM'ed tracks and RIAA sponsored lawsuits against file-sharers.

Nine Inch Nails has taken the model one step further by only making their new album (Ghosts I-IV) available through their website - Radiohead, on the other hand, shifted to a standard distribution model after a few months. This new model allows money to flow directly to the artists who produce the work. However, more than being a simple example of where music distribution seems to be going, this new album is actually fantastic. It is unlike anything NIN has ever released, and should garner them fans from demographics they've never touched before.

I'd definitely recommend giving it a try - there's a free 9 track download (essentially the full first disc.) The entire 36 track album can be had for $5 as a download in ridiculously high quality 320kbps (un-DRM'ed) MP3, FLAC lossless, or Apple Lossless formats.

It's only through progressive thinking like this by Trent Reznor that the music industry is going to be able to survive the catastrophic changes that have been affecting it so adversely. When you click on the link for Photo Gallery on the right side of the page, you'll now be taken to that page. Of course, older photos are still available, but have been moved to the Photo Archive section.

The new gallery has lots of great features. If you're on a mac, you can subscribe to any one of the albums and have them automatically added to your iPhoto. That way, if I add photos to the album, they will automatically show up in your library the next time you open iPhoto. Pretty slick! If you're more old school, and want to download the photos, you now have a link to download either individual images, or the entire album as a zip file.

Finally, on some albums that are group related, I'll set it up so that others can add photos. The way it works is that I'll send you an email address. Any photos you send to that address will automatically be added to the album and show up in my iPhoto library, as well as the libraries of anyone else subscribed to the feed. Not too shabby!

Here's to slick technology to make our lives easier!

The gallery can be accessed directly at http://gallery.mac.com/greg.smithies#gallery

Addicted to Apple, and could kill 5 year olds?

<dc:subject>Greg's Main Blog</dc:subject>

85%How Addicted to Apple Are You?

27

Indonesia Photos!

I had an absolutely incredibly trip to Indonesia for a month for work. A few months ago, myself, my school community, Prince Charles, and the world historical community at large were stunned with the gratuitous execution of David Rattray (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/news/news.html?in_article_id=431880&in_page_id=1770&in_page_id=1770&expand=true) during another botched robbery.

Now, anyone who knows me well knows that I am one of the largest advocates for South Africa and the wonderful things that have happened in that country. I see a bright future for it and firmly plan on returning to have a productive life there one day. But one has to draw the line at a certain point and lose some of the love one has for a country when the crime seems to have spiraled completely out of control. All I ask is, how many more must die before president Mbeki decides to make crime a number one priority in South Africa. Further, how many more of my friends and acquaintances have to lay down their lives in this hidden war before the glimmer of the rough diamond that is South Africa wears off completely and even the people like me, the ones who really do see a future there, are driven away, never to return?

I am shocked, disgusted and losing my optimism very quickly.

More Stories:
Bride mourns as robbers kill man at resort
Honeymoon ends in tragedy
Rattray's death was a hit - report
In cold blood at Rourke's Drift
Finally, the media gets angry about crime

Jajah Dialer 0.82 Released

I just released Version 0.82 of Jajah Dialer, my Dashboard Widget for Mac OS X. That's right - you can back up your entire <s>il</s>legal MP3 and movie collection no matter what the size for $4.95 per month. The client software that you load onto your computer handles everything for you. You simply select the folders to back up, and every time a file changes it backs it up to Mozy's servers. It does block level incremental backups, making them incredibly fast as it only backs up the parts of a file that change. All in all a great service. There's a Mac client coming soon too! The widget now has support for searching the Mac Address Book for numbers, as well as a much more unified interface. FInally, I've added back a "Classic Jajah" mode that allows the user to use the widget just as if it were the original widget prior to version 0.4 - in other words, using the Jajah native interface for dialing as opposed to the Apple native one. Jajah itself is an internet telephony company that allows you to make free or very cheap international calls through the internet. However, where it differs from other services like Skype is that one doesn't need a computer with microphone and speakers. Spreeder flashes the words at you one at a time at a pace you decide. It's still even rarer that the inventors claim to do it through a violation of one of the most fundamental rules of physics - conservation of energy. Well, that's exactly what Steorn, a new start-up tech firm is claiming. Not only is their method of creating cheap and clean, but "energy produced is done so without recourse to external source" and "with the exception of mechanical failure the technology will continue to operate indefinitely." Wow - some pretty mightly claims!

The company then goes on to do some other very interesting things. For one, they act like a completely proprietary firm that is aiming to make millions licensing the technology. This, in itself is not strange, it is probably what I would do were I sitting on such a potential gold-mine. In order to protect their interests they are conducting private third party validation of their technology, which is also a logical move, especially for such lofty claims. However, what is strange is that they claim to eventually release the technology under a modified version of the GNU General Public License (GPL). I'd beg the question, how modified, because as it stands, the GPL leaves very little room for an individual or company to make money from an invention in anything other than the supplying of support services.

Well, good luck to them either way - apparently all will be revealed at the end of the first quarter 2007. Unfortunately, both of them are generally out of the system designer's hands. It's not the cryptographic algorithms used are flawed and hence allow hackers to listen in on your transactions. In fact, cryptographic systems used by banks and online retailers at the moment (when you see the lock in your browser and the address starts with https) are so complex that even a farm of the world's fastest computers would take hundreds of years to crack them. So, if the algorithms aren't the problem, what is? The two main problems are firstly that people are gullible, and second that people don't look after their own computers. Both of these are completely out of the service provider's hands.

The first issue, that people are gullible, is what leads to phishing attacks. These are when you get an email say something along the lines of: there is a problem with your account, and if you don't verify your account details, we're going to delete your account. Please go to the following website and verify your account." When you click on the link it takes you to a site that looks, for all intents and purposes, like your bank's website. Some of the more sophisticated ones will even log you into your real banking website after you enter your username and password. But either way, in any population, there will always be a certain percentage of users gullible enough to fall for this ruse, go to the fake website, and essentially give their login details away.

THe second issue is that of users who either are too lazy, or too ignorant to be able to protect their computers from viruses and malware. These users generally run Windows, which is unfortunate, as it is such an easily compromised operating system. Either way, they end up with key-loggers on their computer which record all of their keystrokes and submit them to a malicious third party. This person can then obviously see all of their usernames and passwords.

It is obvious that educating end users isn't working, and the security of customer computers is generally out of the scope of control of most service providers. Thus, they have to rethink their login processes to circumvent these human errors. Along comes the token (which Paypal calls the security key.) This is a small device (small enough to be kept on a bunch of keys.) Whenever the customer goes to the bank, or service provider's website, they are asked for their usual username and password, and also for a numeric code that is provided by the token. THis is a continually changing number, based either on the time of login, or the number of logins. Either way, the token is synchronized with the bank's server so the server knows what the next number the token should spit out is. If the number it is expecting doesn't match the one provided by the person login on, the bank knows that the person is not in possession of the token. IN other words, now you can actually go ahead and hand out your username and password to anyone you wish (though I wouldn't recommend it) and as long as you don't give them the actual physical device that is the token, they still won't be able to log in as you.

This sounds like the kind of system that should have been in place for years - it doesn't rely on customer intelligence.

Either way, the point of this post is that Paypal, the online payment scheme, is now offering such a device, for a once off fee of $5. If you're a paypal user, and have your paypal account linked to your bank account, as most people do, then it would be a fantastic idea to order one, because then at least you can be certain that unless you're stupid enough to give someone else your username, password, and your security key, your money is going to be safe from the more nefarious people out there in internet land.

Jajah - A Skype Killer?

VS

Being an international student I spend more than my fair share of time making international phone calls through Skype, which, if you haven't heard of it, is an internet based telephony service that allows you to talk to other Skype users anywhere in the world for free, or call ordinary phones from your computer to anywhere in the world, and only pay local rates. generally you save in the region of 95% compared with calling the international number directly from your phone. However, Skype does have one main flaw, and that's its requirement that you have access to a computer in order to make the calls, which isn't ideal if you are constantly on the go.

Well, along comes Jajah with a very elegant solution. Using the same technology as Skype they are also able to let you talk to other Jajah users for free, or call any phone in the world for a 95% discount, the clincher is that you don't need a computer, rather, the entire system is run through your cell phone. You download a small applet onto your phone. When you want to call someone, you use the applet to dial their number then (and here's where the magic is) Jajah calls the person on their phone, and calls you back on your cell phone, thus connecting you but completely without the need to be sitting in front of your computer! I've given the service a try, and the sound quality definitely rivals, if not beats skype, and there seems to be much less delay than one gets when using Skype.

The ethos of the service is that phones are a great way to talk to people, and no-one wants to have to deal with microphones and headsets attached to their computers. Thus, the service can be used with any phone in the world, mobile or landline. if you are using a landline phonethen you will require a computer to do the dialling. You dial a number on their website and tell it what phone to call you back on (your mobile, your landline, a random payphone...) the service then calls the number you desire and calls you back on whatever phone you specified - simple, elegant and easy to use.

As it stands, there's only one nuisance I can find with the service, and that's if you don't have the applet on your cell phone you have to go to their website to dial. It was annoying enough for me to do something about it: For Mac users, you're probably already comfortable with Widgets and how useful they are. Well, I've put together a Dashboard widget that allows you to log into the Jajah service and have the ability to dial available to you at the touch of a button:

Click the picture to download Jajah Dialer.wdgt

Give it a try, tell me what you think!

Exams are over! Next Stop Christmas!

<dc:subject>Greg's Main Blog</dc:subject>

That is pretty much it. I received both offers about two months ago and both of them have been sitting on my desk since then, screaming at me to make a decision every time I looked at them. I, not being able to really make up my mind between Private Banking and Global Transaction Services, have tried my hardest to ignore them whilst I churned over the two options in the back of my mind. Well, the bell has tolled and I now have until the 1st December to decide what to do (yes, that's four days and I have to courier the letter.) The main issue is that neither of them have any significant black marks against them that would place the other ahead. There's also all of the pressure - feeling like I'm defining the rest of my life with a simple signature. All together it doesn't make for a simple task.

Well, that's my little rant on that topic. I'm going to probably have to make my decision by about 3pm tomorrow in order to make sure that my letter reaches New York on time, so it should be an interesting few hours. As a geek I love surfing the web constantly for information on just about anything, but mainly tech related stuff. I also love everything to do with Unix and Mac OS X. What comes with that addiction is a certain liking of the command line terminal. Soooo, how do you marry the two? Ditch your usual graphical web-browser such as Safari or Firefox and start using a command-line based text only web browser like Links. It's fantastic for browsing when you really just want the information on sites because there are no ads that show up and it's only you and the text. Also, you never have to take your hands off the keyboard, which is great as we all know how much geeks despise using the mouse! So, what's it like? Here's an idea, perhaps you'll feel the need to give it a try yourself, though I doubt it:

Below is this webpage and the bottom picture is CNN.com.

I'd say there's probably only one thing geekier than this, and that's Das Keyboard!

I GOT A JOB!

OK, so this may be old news for some people as I've actually known for quite a while (a week) but I finally got a job! Fantastic! Actually, it took a whole lot less time than I was expecting. I thought that I'd be going through the whole interview/sucking up process until about mid-November, but, it turns out that the banks are keen to get offers out early, and, quite frankly, the novelty of all the interviewing was wearing rather thin, so I decided to throw in the towel and accept the offer. That's not to say that I'm not happy with my job, in fact, the offer I plan on accepting is with my top choice firm (CitiGroup) and in the tope department that I wanted to work for (Global Transaction Services) which is a division of their Corporate & Investment Banking Group. I've got so many facts running around in my head at the moment that I don't know which way is up. In fact, I could probably argue that the direction up is completely dependent not only on the current real interest rate, and hence national demand for money, but is simultaneously equal to the Herfindahl-Hirschman Index over the Price Elasticity of Demand. The REALLY funny thing is that, this time next week I won't ever remember being in class, let alone what I learned this semester. I'd go so far as to say that this time in a week I'll be back in Sunny South Africa enjoying a Windhoek Lager at News Cafe in the sun, as opposed to my current situation of feeling my brain doing little back somersaults whilst simultaneously trying to say the alphabet backwards. The saddest part of the situation is that, even though Ive' gotten three exams over and done with, I still have three left to go. I've definitely beaten the curve on two of the exams I took, but my Finance one took me to the cleaners instead. Oh well, you can't win them all. But, either way, I think the moral of the story is that, no matter who you think you are, don't EVER, EVER take 7 classes in one semester at Wharton. What a tragedy - I missed a BUNCH of them. They're up to mixed tape 11 not, so I'm pretty sad that I missed out on so man. After all, this is FREE music that's actually GOOD! For those of you not in the know, the Mercedes Benz Mixed Tape is an album compilation put out every 6 to 9 weeks by Merc specifically designed to show off new talent in music. They give it way free, which you can't complain about, and generally, even if you haven't heard of the artists, the music is incredible. It's mainly Acid Jazz style chilled out or even trip-hop type stuff, but it's easy listening enough that even if you don't like those genres of music, chances are you'll enjoy this.

Well, I haven't given the new album a proper listen yet, but I definitely look forward to doing so sometime over the next week. Speaking of new music though, two new discoveries in the easy listening category, both of them with their own takes on the "story telling female vocalist" genre pioneered by Aimee Man and Tori Amos - Rachael Yamagata and Brandi Carlyle - have both been in heavy rotation on my iPod somewhere between all of the tech podcasts I listen to, such as TWIT, Engadget, Security Now and Digg Nation.

First Mac OS X Virus?

<dc:subject>Greg's Main Blog</dc:subject>

Today the first few reports started to arise about a file that was initially loaded onto the Mac Rumors forums purporting to be a collection of pictures of the latest version of Apples Mac OS X Leopard. However, when the TGZ file was decompressed, it in fact contained a UNIX executable file. The file (or compiled script) then inserts uses messaging apps on the Mac platform such as the inbuilt iChat.app in order to send itself to every person in the user's buddy list. Companies such as Symantec and Sophos are claiming that this is the first version of a Mac OS X virus found in the wild, whilst others claim that it is in fact rather a Trojan, because it is an executable file purporting to be a normal file (in this case a JPG) that requires the user to activate it. It must be noted that whether this is a virus/worm or a trojan, it doesn't exploit any security holes in the operating system, but rather simply runs a script. Because of this, it cannot get escalation of privileges without user help, in other words, it can't use iChat to propagate unless the user running it is Admin level (as one would be if you were using the main account that your Mac was set-up with) if however, you are not computing from an Admin level account (a good practice for anyone on any operating system) then the file has to ask you for an administrator level password before it can propagate. It must be noted though that the file itself is not malicious, and doesn't delete or destroy anything on the computer.

The moral of the story here is two fold: Firstly, in day to day computing tasks, one should never be logged in as an administrator (this is specifically true of Windows users, but still somewhat true of all operating systems.) In order to avoid using an admin level account all the time, one should set up at least two accounts on your computer, one with admin level privileges (enables by selecting the "Allow this user to administer the computer" in the accounts tab in System Preferences on Mac Os X) that is only ever used when you need to do something that specifically requires admin privileges, such as installing new software and mucking around with the underpinnings of the system. The second account, should NOT have admin privileges, and should be the one that is used for day to day computing tasks. In this way, if you are simply surfing around and a nefarious file gets onto your computer, even if you double click it and execute it, it won't have sufficient privileges to do anything too harmful to your computer's main system.

The second part of the moral is that, no matter what, when you are asked to enter your username and password when running a program or file, make sure that you know what program is asking for your credentials, and understand that by giving an application your username and password you are giving it free reign to do what it wants to the contents of your hard drive. Thus, don't simply type your username and password into every box that asks for it, don't get into that habit ever!

For a more in depth explanation and guide to basic Mac OS X security, see this article.

Lastly, this doesn't mean that the sky is falling for Mac Users. If you put it into perspective, it's still only one, non-malicious virus in the past 5 years for Mac OS X vs. over 200 000 Windows viruses per year!

OS X Not so secure?

<dc:subject>Greg's Main Blog</dc:subject>

Here's an article describing why Mac OS X may not be as inherently safe as previously assumed. I came to a strange conclusion this semester, if you don't party too much, and hence don't go out 3 or 4 nights a week, and in the time you gain not having a hangover actually pay attention in class and do your reading before class and all of your homework on time, then there really isn't a hell of a lot to do when it comes to finals. In fact, I'd say that I've had one of the most relaxing weeks of my life whilst everyone else has been sweating blood! granted, I did sit in front of my computer for about 30 hours straight, taking short breaks for food and water, in order to finish the two take home exams I had to to, but ten thousand (sense making) words later, and I was done. She'll be back on Tuesday at which point I promise to post all of her photos, of which there are many, I hear. His name is John Cruz and he was incredible. Not many people have heard of him, and hence I don't really know how he won the grammy, cause usually they only go to people who are already famous, but it would appear that for a change a grammy was actually awarded to someone for their musical abilities and not the amount of skin that they show on TV. He got the whole place going crazy - not because his music was wild (it was actually really chilled out, sort of Jack Johnson type stuff) but because he was just so fantastic. The vibe downstairs in the lounge was overwhelmingly good.

Later, after he had finished playing, Jon Stott and I threw a rock star after party in our lounge up stairs which everyone also thought was really great. What a fantastic weekend! Photos available here.

iPod Nano...100% drool worthy!

Many people dream of becoming excessively powerful and rich in order to buy huge houses in Monaco, or crazy car collections. My reasoning is somewhat geekier - I just want to be able to have enough money to comfortably buy each and every new product Apple releases. Take for example the iPod Nano - it's thinner than a bloody pencil and holds 1000 songs. It's less than 2/3 the size od the iPod Mini which it replaces. Definitely the must have item of the year - I WANT! I've also taken the liberty of adding the TV ad for it to the files section of the page.

Updates

I've added all of the old funnies to the funnies section and two crazy videos of the Ariel Atom to the files section, check them out!

Welcome one and all

Welcome to the new site. I hope that you all like what I've done. If truth be told, I've actually done a whole lot less than I normally would have to make this page possible. I'm using an application known as Rapidweaver to control the layout of the whole thing, with a few tweaks from myself. This is, in theory, going to make it a hell of a lot easier for me to update my site, and hence, the chances of me keeping the site up to date are much greater. I'm still wondering what to do with the photo album sections, and what the best format for hosting the thousands of photos will be, but I should have them up and running shortly.

A quick note of the main new features that I'm going to be putting in, or that are already available:

RSS feeds on most pages, meaning that you can tune in to my news and other such items through your favorite news reader.

A file sharing section where I will place programs and other files that I find of interest.

I'm sure I'll think of a whole lot of other things to add in here all in good time.

Hope the new site is up to scratch. Cheers
